We are in support of establishment of medical varsity by FMC - FUNAAB VC

The Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof Felix Salako says the institution is in total support of the proposed establishment of University of Medicine by Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Salako made this known when he led principal officers of FUNAAB on a courtesy visit to FMC.

He added that the university if established would create job for the young ones and be of great benefit to Nigerians.

He said "We have nothing against the establishment of the university. Education should be accessible to all. It will create job opportunity for the young ones.

"If a medical university is established definitely, it will be of good benefit to people around there and all over Nigeria."

He expressed his university's preparedness to partner with FMC regarding its Radiological equipment laboratory.

The VC regretted that some scientists manning laboratory equipment in the country are not efficient, saying wrong treatment of ailments starts from wrong laboratory test.

He said "The country has gone so bad even in terms of quality, people who practice science are not telling the truth and science is about telling the truth.

"How can a technologist just sit down and write a report. That is where wrong treatment of ailment starts when the laboratory test is not done right. So, let just pray that we get standard laboratory equipment and people with good conscience to man them. It's one thing to get the right equipment and it's another thing to have people of good conscience to man them."

He disclosed that FUNAAB is intensifying research on herbal medicine as part of plan to float Diabetic Centre, an initiative of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The Medical Director of FMC, Prof Adewale Musa while speaking during the visit said that the centre had secured 170 hectares of land for establishment of the university as part of efforts to transform the facility into teaching hospital.

Musa pledged continuous partnership with FUNAAB on research, which according to him forms basis for development.

He assured of further best services to FUNAAB students and members of staff who seek medical service and attachment at FMC.
