The governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose slap a lecturer and a member of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Ekiti State University, Faculty of Sciences, Prof. Aribisala. Aribisala, during a meeting.
The meeting beween Fayose and the lecturers was meant to be reconciliatory, but situation turned sour when the governor stepped forward to daze the lecturer with a slap, accusing him of interrupting his speech.
Fayose, according to reports, slapped the professor, because he was enraged that the lecturer interrupted him while speaking, an action he considered as rude.
According a lecturer, who was at the meeting, the governor was annoyed that the senior colleague interrupted him while he (Fayose) was talking.
However, the professor who hailed from Ayedun Ekiti while addressing the media expressed displeasure with the action by the governor, wondering why he took such an extra step of slapping him as he attempted to express an opinion.
He described the action by the governor as disheartening, wondering why the governor acted in such manner at the meeting which he said was very peaceful.
Professor Aribisala denied ever interrupting the governor rudely at the meeting, recalling that he had at least, attended so many meetings with Fayose before now without any problem.
He said what he did that angered Fayose was his attempt to call his attention to some error in the figures he was reeling out on the amount of money the state government owed Ekiti State University.
He said Fayos’s threat to sack him didn’t move him since according to him, the tenure of the governor will soon come to a close.
He lamented what he described as the disrespectful manners of Fayose in which case he was becoming unbearable to lecturers in Ekiti State University recalling, “The first time we held meeting with him, he shouted on everybody and again, he exchanged physical combat with a lecturer.”
However, the Chairman of ASUU in his remarks on the issue described the action by the governor as barbaric and unfair.
He said the Ekiti governor should not have taken an extra step to slap a university Professor who, he opined, is old enough to be his father.
He said the Union would meet later to deleberate on the issue at stake with a view to taking necessary steps, just as he stressed, ‘A slap on one is a slap to all”.
