Solidarity greetings to you all in the spirit of comradeship and unionism, it is with a depressed mind, shaking hands and empty pockets that I write this letter to express the shock I got when I heard that we are to pay an additional fee of #5,000 to the already hiked fee of #12,500 making the total of #17,500 for a convocation gown when we are aware of what our colleagues in other institutions are paying.
I understand the fact that Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic is a state owned tertiary institution that has been financing itself in the past years, but this should not be the reason why the prospective students, returning student, graduating students and even the alumni should be faced and charged with different outrageous fee ranging from the #5,000 for matriculation gown, #17,500 for a convocation gown and the likes.
I plea all appropriate quarters to please consider the present situation of things in the country and also consider that our parents are civil servants whom the government has refused to pay the peanut token called salary that is not even enough to feed a family of one for a complete month. I want you to please come to our aid and save our souls.
The initial amount we were asked to pay is breathtaking but we had to dance to the tune, still not enough, we are asked to pay an additional #5,000. Where should our parent source for it?
Another thing we want you to consider is the fact that the week after the convocation, our NYSC registration starts which would require some money, three weeks after, our NYSC camping begins and this comes along with much expenses. Please put yourselves in the shoes of our parents, after declaring that we're paying #12,500, now telling them the next day that it has been increased with #5,000. Was it not concluded in the board meeting that we are to pay the initial amount to why do you think you can just impose unnecessary fee on us without considering the souse we are getting it from.
We plea you to reason along with us that not all our parents are Professors, not all are PhD holders, not all are Masters(Msc) holder, not all are rich business men/women, most of our parents are struggling on the street hawking, selling petty things by the roadside, the few ones in offices are there running errands for your likes.
We would be grateful if you would be considerate as we have already been drained while we were in school.
