The Abeokuta Polo Club is set to mark a historic milestone with the official groundbreaking ceremony of its facility scheduled for May 17, 2025.
The event signals the beginning of a new chapter in Nigeria’s prestigious Polo legacy, as the club prepares to launch operations with 20 founding members.
These pioneering members will play a crucial role in shaping the club’s vision and future, laying the foundation for what promises to be a dynamic center for Polo and equestrian excellence in Ogun State.
According to the statement by the President of the association, Dr Sherrif Adams Abdulrahman, he said the objectives of the new association is saddle with the core principles of promoting Polo with other equestrian sports and enriching the cultural landscape of Ogun State.
"The objectives include fostering local talents, attracting tourism, and contributing significantly to community development," he said.
"Guided by various Affiliation with Polo Associations, the club will adheres to national standards and best practices, ensuring a high level of sportsmanship and professionalism.
"The vision extends beyond just playing polo; we aim to create a vibrant community hub that engages youth through specialized development programs. These initiatives will provide young individuals with opportunities to learn about horsemanship, sportsmanship, and teamwork, thus nurturing future leaders and athletes. By integrating community engagement with equestrian activities, the Abeokuta Polo Club aspires to become a cornerstone of cultural and sporting life in Ogun State.
"The Abeokuta Polo Club has long-term goals such as attracting tourism with the entire Abeokuta Polo Luxury city within a the 100 acres of Abeokuta Polo estate and contributing to community development.
"The Club through the Abeokuta Polo luxury city aims to integrate itself into the fabric of Ogun State, providing opportunities for recreation and development.
"Establishment of the Abeokuta Polo Club also holds significant potential for driving economic growth and development within Ogun State. This initiative is poised to create diverse job opportunities, ranging from groundskeepers and trainers to hospitality and event management staff. The influx of employment will not only stimulate local economies but also provide valuable skill-building prospects for residents.
"Moreover, the Polo Club aims to attract tourism by hosting high-profile tournaments and events that appeal to polo enthusiasts both nationally and internationally. This influx of visitors will lead to increased revenue for local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and retail outlets."
Dr Abdulrahman also stated that "The need for adequate infrastructure to support the club's facilities, such as better roads and modern hotels, will stimulate further investment and infrastructural improvements in the region."
